Google Mobile First Index Expanding Within Next Several Weeks

Yesterday (as I covered at SEL), Gary Illyes from Google said at PubCon that Google will be rolling in more web sites into the mobile first index starting over the next several weeks. Google first began moving some sites into the mobile first index last October but said it was a very limited number of sites that were in that batch. Google promised, if your site is not ready it won’t be moved yet. Well, now the next batch is coming and eventually your site might be next. So make sure to read the Google tipsand my post on what you need to know as…

Twitter attributes more than half of its $575M Q1 ad revenue to video

Up 21% year over year, Twitter’s $575 million in advertising earnings is split evenly between its US and international markets. According to Twitter’s Q1 2018 earnings report, video ads accounted for more than half of the $575 million advertising revenue it earned during the first quarter of this year. Twitter’s total revenue for the quarter was $665 million, a 21 percent increase year over year, and was split nearly evenly between its US market ($347 million) and international markets ($318 million). The $318 million revenue earned from international markets reflected 53…

Snap revenue takes a hit in Q1 2018, down from $286M in Q4 2017 to $231M last quarter

Snap Inc. released its quarterly earnings for Q1 2018, reporting $230.7 million in total revenue for the first quarter of the year. Year over year, Snap’s total revenue saw a 54 percent jump — but revenue was down compared to the previous quarter, when it reported $286 million in Q4 2017. CEO Evan Spiegel attributes the loss in revenue to the company’s decision to roll out a major redesign of the app this quarter — separating user content from creator content. “As we have mentioned on our past two earnings…

Any advertiser wanting to run political or issue ads must be verified on the platform and include ‘Paid for’ information with the ad. Facebook is now enforcing its new policies for political and issue-related ads. Announced last month, the new rules require all advertisers running political or issue ads on the platform to verify their identity and location. US election and issue ads will have to be clearly labeled and will include “Paid for” information to identify the person or organization behind the ad. “This will help ensure that you can see…

Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool has Returned

Fear not, my friends. It appears that our report last Monday about Yahoo! Overture being dead was a bit premature. According to WebmasterWorld members, the Yahoo! Overture Keyword Tool is back. The optimistic hopefuls have revived the useful tool from the dead. Here’s a search I performed just a few minutes ago.   It definitely looks like it’s working, and it’s using data from January 2007. Other forum members report that it’s showing May data. I suppose it may vary per search term but I’m unable to get May data. Forum discussion continues at WebmasterWorld.

SEMPO Has Been Invited to Ring NASDAQ’s Bell

Matt McGee writes at Search Engine Land that SEMPO has been invited to ring NASDAQ’s bell in New York City on December 1st. This is a huge honor for SEMPO and it indicates that the organization has been doing quite well this past year. SEMPO has been asked as a result of a big deal with Microsoft where they are working with Microsoft adCenter. Of course, everyone is super excited — this is great news for the search marketing organization. This is especially true after their early struggles and questions on if SEMPO will surviveor not. They…

February 2018 Google Webmaster Report

This past month, Google announced the Page Speed update, a new ranking algorithm designed to lower the ranking of mobile pages that are really slow. Google also may have released a few unconfirmed algorithmic updates to core search. Google released the beta Google Search Console to all, which gave us 16 months of data. A new PageSpeed Insights tool came out with some interesting new ways to report on speed as well. Google promised to have a solution to show the publisher URLs for AMPpages in the coming future. Google also opened up a new Twitter account named @searchliaison to help people understand why Google…

The status of Google’s presence in Google Shopping Auctions

Google has long been visible in these auctions, not only through Express but also Play and Store. Contributor Andy Taylor evaluates its presence and assesses how it’s changed over time. As my company (Merkle) reported just a couple of weeks ago, Amazon has exited US Google Shopping auctions for all advertisers that had consistently seen it as a competitor for the last few quarters. While the rationale behind this decision remains somewhat of a mystery, those brands competing against the e-commerce giant are certainly not sad as a result of the recent…
