How to use brand mentions for SEO, or the linkless future of link building

Google has used links to determine the authority of websites since its early days: the idea of webpages casting “votes” for other pages by linking to them is at the core of the PageRank algorithm. This led to the rise of numerous manipulative link tactics. Google reacted with the Penguin update and manual penalties; link […] Google has used links to determine the authority of websites since its early days: the idea of webpages casting “votes” for other pages by linking to them is at the core of the PageRank…

The SEM automation primer

Wondering how to get started with automation? Columnist David Fothergill provides a handy primer, including recommended tools and what they can be used for. To varying degrees, my last few posts have flirted with the use of technology in search engine marketing. These posts have resulted in a few great questions regarding tools I’d use, or how to get started with this or that. There was recently a #ppcchat dedicated solely to the role of automation in this field, so I decided it would be a good time to provide a bit of a…

Ohio AG Sues to Declare Google a Public Utility

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has filed a lawsuit trying to have Google declared a public utility. Google is facing increased scrutiny on multiple fronts, with some critics saying the company should be categorized as a public utility. Such a move would subject Google to more regulation, much like a gas or electric company. Supporters of the move say the company’s monopoly in search justifies the classification and increased regulation. Ohio AG Yost is one such critic, and is now suing to force a reclassification of Google. “Google uses its…

FTC Sues Frontier Over Misleading Internet Speed Claims

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has sued Frontier Communications, accusing the company of lying about its internet speeds. The US already lags behind other developed countries, in terms of high-speed broadband, and the Biden administration has made broadband improvement a major part of its agenda. Given the current climate, it’s not surprising Frontier is under scrutiny. The FTC has filed a lawsuit, joined by Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, and…

Bing Launches On Firefox OS, Does It Matter?

Bing has launched an app for the Firefox Marketplace. As pointed out by The Next Web, Google doesn’t yet have an official app there. Firefox OS is a mobile operating system “built entirely using open web standards” (HTML5). It’s both an effort to reinvigorate the mobile web and keep Firefox from falling into total mobile irrelevance. […] Bing has launched an app for the Firefox Marketplace. When users opt out, advertisers “will receive a string of zeros in place of the identifier.” In an email sent to Android app developers on Wednesday, Google announced that it will enable users to opt out of sharing their Advertiser ID (the unique device identifier that enables marketers to track users as they move between apps), the Financial Times reported Thursday. The announcement comes less than six weeks after Apple rolled out a similar user privacy change with its iOS 14.5 update. What’s going to happen and when. “When a user opts out of interest-based advertising…
